My lessons are great for all skill levels from total beginners to experienced players looking to become more versatile. I teach in an adaptive and flexible style so that they can develop their own style of playing, allowing them to stand out as unique musical artists. Sam is a singer-songwriter who performs and records original material on a regular basis. Growing up in Syracuse, NY, Sam has studied under the tutelage of a diverse set of instructors before becoming self-taught when he enrolled at the University of Buffalo where he was an active part in the musical collaborations among the student body.
Today, being in a thriving artist community in New York City, he performs his music around local venues. Obrist has developed an approach to instruction that focuses on technical skills and fosters a deeper relationship to music through theoretical analysis and ear training. His teaching methods explore improvisation, songwriting, performing, music reading, fingerstyle playing and other important aspects so that students can develop a well-rounded skillset as well as unique voices. His commitment to providing comprehensive music education while teaching in an adaptive style to meet his students’ musical curiosities has helped him build lasting relationships with many of his students.
