viola lessons in upper west side new york city

Spencer R.,

Spencer brings something rare to his teaching: a musician's heart and a genuine belief that every student deserves to find their own path into music.

Spencer earned his Bachelor of Arts in Viola Performance from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music, where he performed in chamber ensembles each semester across a broad range of classical and contemporary repertoire. Before that, he was selected twice for the New York State School Music Association All-State Orchestra, an honor reserved for the top high school musicians in New York, earned through high-level solo performance at the NYSSMA Evaluation Festival.

His teaching experience spans private studios, community music programs, and classrooms across New York City, including work with the Noel Pointer Foundation, where he has brought string instruction to underserved children throughout the metropolitan area. He also performs regularly at venues like Prospect Park and Central Park, keeping his playing life active and present.
What sets Spencer apart is the warmth and honesty he brings to every lesson. He tells his students early on: "It's possible we might find out I'm not the right teacher for you, and that is okay. Don't give up." That kind of openness creates trust, and trust is where real learning begins.

Spencer is especially passionate about the recital experience. He believes that performing for an audience, even just once, has the power to transform a reluctant student into a devoted one. The stage, he knows, has a way of making everything click.

Whether your child is picking up an instrument for the first time or looking to grow their existing skills, Spencer meets every student exactly where they are with patience, creativity, and a deep love for the music.

Spender teaches private Violin, Viola, Piano, and Guitar lessons.
