Lucy is a solo and collaborative pianist, interdisciplinary artist, and teacher based in New York City. Her teaching method draws from a rich repertoire ranging from baroque music of the 17th century to classical music, and popular styles. She has worked with students ranging from beginners to conductors who wish to improve their piano skills.
As a pianist, Lucy began piano lessons at the age of 4. She is trained in the Suzuki method, as well as level-based pédagogies. Lucy tailors lesson plans to each student to fit their learning style.
As a pianist, Ms. Yao is an active performer in NYC, Boston, Copenhagen, as well as projects throughout Europe. She is passionate about collaborating with performers to interpret classical works in a different light. Recent engagements include an interdisciplinary project with theater, poetry, music, and improvisation with the Collaborative Arts Ensemble to reinterpret the music of Bach, and as part of the Ambient Orchestra that helped bring David Bowie’s music to life in a collaboration with Evan Ziporyn and Maya Beiser.
Ms. Yao’s performances have led her from the Chopin Festival in Naleczow, Poland, a renovated cathedral-music venue in Copenhagen, to the Contemporary Opera Ensemble at the Manhattan School of Music, to Areté Venue and Gallery in Brooklyn, and beyond the realms of a concert pianist. As a passionate activist, she has organized benefit concerts for the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union), American Lung Cancer Foundation at her alma mater, Western Michigan University, as well as in venues throughout Denmark, France, New York City, and Boston. She is the founder of a contemporary collective based in NYC, Strangers in a Room, which gives voice to forgotten women in history. In her solo repertoire, she programs her concerts with a classical and contemporary repertoire because she believes that Classical music deserves a new context to thrive in. Lucy has held collaborative pianist positions at the Interlochen Academy of the Arts, the University of Michigan, the Manhattan School of Music. Lucy holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music and Western Michigan University.”
