5 Things You Can Start Doing Today to Be More Successful At Playing the Piano
You might be finding it hard to improve your piano skills. In fact, you might feel as though you have come to a dead end. However, the following tips will help you improve your piano playing skills. Here are 5 things you can start doing today to be more successful at playing the piano.
1. Practice When You Are Focused
This could be in the morning or in the evening depending on your schedule, but you have to pick the right time i.e. when your energy levels are high. Moreover, it should be at a time when you are actually looking forward to practicing your piano skills. When starting out, always make sure your hands are well relaxed i.e. without any tension and keep your shoulders down. This is something most people forget and they keep their shoulders locked-up.
2. Improve On Your Musical Notation As Well As Your Reading Skills
You need to improve your music reading skills so you can understand musical notation. If you want to improve your skills, learn more about advanced notations like dynamics, key and time signatures as well as tempo. You could also learn to sight read so you can better translate what is on the music sheet.
3. Rehearse On Dress Rehearsals
Every time you intend to practice, always set a dress rehearsal, even though you might be doing an informal rehearsal. If you play through the program, you will be able to think through the process from start to finish. You will discover things you might not have during the performance on the practice. Play through the pieces you intend to play so you find the hard translations or the easier ones so it will not be challenging during the performance. If you can, rope someone to listen to your rehearsal so he can give you constructive feedback on your performance.
4. Know the Performance Piano As Well
If you will not be using your piano during the performance, practice on the one you will use because anything that will be different could be an actual distraction. If you will be using a digital keyboard, do sound checks first. Then confirm that the necessary equipment is in place including the amplifiers, cords, and speakers.
5. Use a Metronome
Most people have the tendency to rush or slow their tempo when learning difficult pieces. You can use a metronome in order to maintain your tempo. This will also help you track the phrases where the tempo gets astray and you will know where you need to practice.
